Qualifications of Key Personnel
Sarah K. Roy

SARAH K. ROY received her B.S. degree from the University of South Alabama with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Her degree concentrated on aquatic and marine macroinvertebrate ecology.

Her interests in benthic macroinvertebrate taxonomy have evolved to include expertise in both marine and freshwater systems. She has been active in the identification of benthic specimens from the estuaries of New England, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Puerto Rico. As for freshwater experience, she has performed identifications on specimens from Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. She has provided this service to assist industrial, municipal and federal and state entities in NPDES permitting, TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) evaluations, Discharge Information Zone surveys (DIZ), and various other regulatory and research projects, including a Dissolved Oxygen study in Terrebonne Basin, Louisiana. Ms. Roy has also utilized sediment profile images taken by underwater, under-sediment cameras to analyze benthic organism presence and available habitat.

Ms. Roy is experienced with performing the USEPA Rapid Bioassessment Protocol surveys, which include habitat assessment, physical characterization, periphyton collection, benthic
macroinvertebrate collection and fish collection. She is also one of few to be trained and audited by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to perform Stream Condition Index (SCI) and Bio-reconnaissance surveys in the state of Florida. These surveys require a value to be placed on the available habitat for organisms to thrive before considering a location to be impacted by unnatural/man-made influences. Along with benthic macroinvertebrates, Ms. Roy is experienced in the collection of periphyton, mussels, oysters and fish. She has also collected most types of water quality samples using equipment such as ISCO samplers, Kemmerer bottles, and multi-parameter datasonde type loggers.

She has performed compliance inspections for industrial and municipal NPDES dischargers for the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) as well as, environmental observation and regulation at construction sites to ensure appropriate BMP usage and maintenance. Ms. Roy also has conducted both acute and chronic toxicity testing for marine, freshwater, produced waters and chemically treated seawater.

Ms. Roy is currently a member of the North American Benthological Society, the Biological Society of Washington, and a NAUI Certified SCUBA diver.
